STAAR®Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

Do you qualify?

The STAAR®Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) studies are intended for individuals with hyperopia (farsightedness) or severe myopia (nearsightedness with astigmatism.) Hyperopia is a condition that occurs when the cornea is too flat and/or the eye is too short. As a result, light is focused behind the retina, leading to blurred vision.

Patients who qualify for this study have a high refractive correction, thin corneas, or a preference for non-laser vision correction. Some patients prefer the STAAR® ICL procedure compared to the laser procedure because they feel that it is a less invasive option. In contrast to the LASIK procedure where tissue is permanently removed, the STAAR® lens implant can be removed, if needed.

The STAAR® ICL is composed of a biocompatible material, is permeable to gases and nutrients, and has a significant water content. Also, it extremely thin and has a high index of refraction that allows for correction of high levels of hyperopia.

Study Overview

The purpose of these studies is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an investigational artificial lens implanted in front of the natural lens to correct farsightedness or nearsightedness with astigmatism.

Description and Summary of the Procedure

The STAAR® ICL is produced by STAAR® Surgical AG. More information on the lens can be found at www.staar.com.

With the eye under topical or local anesthetic, the surgeon creates an incision in the eye and inserts the lens behind the iris, in front of the natural lens of the eye, using specialized instruments. Following implantation, the lens rests behind the iris surface vaulted over the natural lens of the eye.
